Tutelage is a painting that evokes my earliest memory. The setting for the painting is southern France, when I traveled there to visit many of my favorite painters’ homes and museums. I took a quick phone photo while driving near Arles. Later I realized that one reason I was drawn to the tree-sheltered pathway was that it echoed my memory at 2 years old. I escaped supervision and walked down a similar shady road to a neighboring farm. Tutelage refers to the process of growth, learning, and training that happens over a lifetime.
