Rebecca Gray (nee George) is an American mid-career contemporary abstract painter (b. 1972) who has maintained an active professional studio since 1993: initially in Chicago, IL then relocating to rural Michigan in 2019. Her material study is primarily 2-D, with the first part of her career focused almost exclusively on figure narratives. In 2015, Gray's work expanded into abstraction. Her current studio practice is located in a repurposed barn in the Michigan woods, a solitude which has steered her work toward an ever increasingly simple aesthetic, valuing a limited palette and a more 'still' composition: "When I look at many of my earlier abstracts I'm surprised they didn't seem 'busy' to me when I was painting them. I find my interest in this flat, 2-dimensional space has shrunk down to bare bones: saturation, just a couple of relationships between shapes or colors: room for space. I feel like I'm starting over as a painter in a way, and redoing my education on how to make art, without the pitfalls or road blocks of my past." --Rebecca Gray, 2023. Rebecca Gray holds a BFA in General Fine Art from Maryland Institute, College of Art (1993), a MBA from Spertus Institute (2007) and MFA in Painting and Drawing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2011). Gray founded and is the CEO of The Art House Gallery (2011-present) with work in private collections worldwide.
