    Exhibition Statement:
"I love paper. Foundation of civilization and all that good stuff. Certainly foundational for every artist at some point in their journey.
But here’s the thing - we ask too little from paper. That perfect new sheet of 280g Rives BFK; so beautiful, so pristine, seemingly begging for a charcoal portrait or a lovely watercolor wash. It’s gotta get boring for that slab of compressed cotton.
So, this work, executed over the past 9-10 months, is an exploration in making paper the focal point of the work instead of a mere background. The work began as multi-level, flat assemblages made from layers of different types of handmade paper.
The Dimensional Collage series followed. Paintings on paper were torn, reimagined and reassembled onto other paper remnants. This was the point when the work demanded to be released from not only the confines of the sacred rectangle, they exploded up into the space in front the work.
The final paper sculptures shown in The Correct Use of Paper (Painting in Three Dimensions, waveform/ series) represent the focus of my work right now. Paper as a primary sculptural, compositional and pictorial element of the art; not just a background to hold pastels or paint.
I’d really like to let paper fly." --Ken Hogrefe
