In a number of small paintings I have used ordinary activities: eating, reading, driving…..shitting, as subjects for quick gestural work. In this case the result was not satisfactory and required reworking. Working with a large brush in a space too small for it is something I’ve been exploring after seeing the Cezanne exhibition at the Art Institute. Using a 2” brush on a 12’ x 9’ piece of paper can be a little unnerving, awkward at the least. When working on yupo I typically work on a wet surface, and this is evident by some bleeding and clean scratch marks.
