This work explores juxtaposition: academic realism and evidence of the artist's hand; moments of high chroma and neutrality comprising the palette; modeled illusion of spatial depth with flat shapes and pattern. At first glance the piece appears to be a multi-figure portrait of sleeping children--and it is--however, the title and jumbled proximity of the figure placement/relationships point to a slight tension, wherein the unconscious state of deep sleep and the naiveté of young children is depicted with an almost uncomfortable closeness in the figure placement.
